A river with boulders

Rivers and Flood Defences

Students explore the features of a river to understand the process of river formation, features of the river course and wildlife found along the riverbank.

During this session, students take part in activities to demonstrate the formation of a river and key features found along the stretch of river that you choose to explore. Depending on the site, this can include identifying examples of erosion, deposition, obstacles and flood prevention features. Students can conduct experiments to measure river flow rate, turbidity, depth and pH and discuss the factors affecting these.

Students will use the information from the session to draw a cross-sectional diagram of the river bed.

Suitable for Key Stages 3 and 4. Please let us know at the time of booking if you have a specific learning objective or focus for this session so that we can ensure the chosen site has suitable features.
