All About The Birds

Let your students get closer to wildlife as they compare different bird species in this interactive session exploring adaptation and evolution.

In this session, students have the chance to study the anatomy and ecology of a wide variety of bird species. We will compare the features of different species and discuss the impact of evolution and biodiversity. After dissecting owl pellets to discover what birds of prey eat and how to identify the different species by their bones, we then grab some binoculars and head outside to quietly observe birds in their natural habitat. Suitable for Key Stages 3 and 4.

Key Stage 3 - The variation between species and between individuals of the same species means some organisms compete more successfully, which can drive natural selection. Changes in the environment may leave individuals within a species, and some entire species, less well adapted to compete successfully and reproduce, which in turn may lead to extinction.

Key Stage 4 - The characteristics of a living organism are influenced by its genome and its interaction with the environment. The importance of biodiversity and how organisms are interdependent and are adapted to their environment.
