How To Make A Bird Feeder

Give birds a helping hand in winter by making a bird feeder for your garden.

What you will need
  • Tub (to do your mixing in)
  • Bird seed mix (available at most large supermarkets)
  • Plant pot or yogurt pot
  • String
  • Scissors
  • Fat e.g. lard, Trex or coconut oil

How to make your bird feeder

  1. Make a hole in the bottom of your pot using the scissors.
  2. Cut a piece of string to hang your bird feeder and tie a knot on the end or in a bow.
  3. Thread the string through the hole in the pot. Not pulling the whole way through.
  4. Get your mixing tub and pour in enough bird seed to fill your pot.
  5. Add a 2 tablespoons of fat to the seeds.
  6. Mix to coat the seeds in the fat.
  7. Add the mixture to your pot and press down so everything sticks together.
  8. Place in the fridge overnight to harden.
Once hardened push the feeder out of the pot and hang up.

Feeding waterfowl

The lakes, wetland nature reserves and rivers and canals in Milton Keynes are home to a wealth of wildfowl including ducks, geese, swans and wading birds.

We ask visitors to the parks not to feed birds bread to protect their health and avoid damage to the local environment.
