Date: Saturday 10-May-25, from 12.00pm midday to 2.00pm (2 hours)

Venue: Start and end at Newport Road, Woughton on the Green, Milton Keynes, MK6 3BD

Activities: The new town (now city!) of Milton Keynes was founded in 1967. One of its many innovations was the planting of hundreds of fruit trees, in the gardens of new homes, in community orchards and in public spaces. New residents and local communities had free and easy access to fresh fruit, in their own gardens and in public areas, where they could forage at will for apples, pears, cherries and plums.

Our Afternoon Apple Amble will be an easy two mile walk, exploring some of these historic fruit tree plantings around Peartree Bridge and Woughton on the Green. The Amble will include paved and grassy paths, a stretch of towpath for the 18th century Grand Union Canal and a lane across the lovely open Green at Woughton itself. We’ll end up back at Newport Road, opposite the Woughton Community Orchard.

For those who would like to join us for our Orchard Blossom Picnic afterwards, this will be held at the Woughton Cider Orchards, just off Newport Road, from 2.30pm until 5.30pm. Bring the family, a picnic and a chair or blanket and enjoy a lazy afternoon, eating out under the cider apple trees. You could read a book, play a guitar, throw a ball or take a snooze, too!

This Afternoon Apple Amble  is a good way to spot and learn about some historic and community-accessible fruit trees which can be foraged for personal (non-commercial) use later in the year, when the fruits are ripe.
