New Artwork Unveiled at Howe Park Wood

"The Bee and the Butterfly" is the latest piece of public art to join our collection. Having been awarded Section 106 funding from Milton Keynes Council for this project we have commissioned local artist Melanie Mosaics to create a brand-new outdoor art piece for the Education Centre at Howe Park Wood.
This art piece was created to celebrate pollinators and encourage people to protect them. Bees, butterflies and other pollinators are crucial to biodiversity. Without them, many the crops that we rely on for food and clothes, as well as many wild plants, would disappear.
The artist, Melanie Mosaics, spent time at Howe Park Wood to gain inspiration for her piece and explains her thoughts below:
“A bumblebee visits an ox eye daisy on the outskirts of Howe Park Wood to collect pollen, legs covered in golden pollen drops. A marbled white butterfly pollinates on red clover. This piece celebrates our pollinators and the gorgeous flora and fauna found on this site of special scientific interest".
The beautiful flowers in the scene are found here during May and June, with buttercups showing first, then ox eye daisies, red clover and kidney vetch which is depicted on the bottom right. This is the only plant that small blue butterflies will lay their eggs upon. Gorgeous grasses are seen among the flowers, including red fescue.
Pollinators and wildflowers are in rapid decline. Letting native plants grow is vital for the survival of our pollinators. Please let an area in your garden grow and let our native wildflowers thrive. I hope everyone enjoys the mosaic!”
The mosaic is now on display for people to view at Howe Park Wood our ancient woodland located in the southwest of Milton Keynes.
We are also working hard to develop our wildflower meadows and the hedgerow habitats that support pollinators that can be found across our 6000 acres of parkland. Please explore them carefully if you come across them.
